A classic English russet apple from the Victorian era, raised in the 1800s on Lord Egremont’s estate in Petworth Sussex. It is highly regarded for its distinctive sweet nutty flavor also described as recalling the scent of crushed ferns. After storage it becomes dry, almost smoky with a tannic quality. A surprisingly versatile fruit; working well in savoury salads, good as a companion for cheese, and yielding a rich thick sweet juice. Best picked late September/early October, this variety will keep until Christmas.
